The most important thing to have when using a scroll saw is a blade. The blades of scroll saws can be sharp and durable, but the right one can wear out quickly, so you'll want to replace them frequently. You'll also need a workpiece drop foot to protect the blade from getting stuck or breaking. Scroll saws take very little time to sharpen.

Basswood is a great wood to practice on when learning how to use a scroll saw, but you'll probably want to avoid it if you're not comfortable with it. It's difficult to make a pattern with the wood because it bends under your blade. While more durable woods like oak are less likely to be chipped and burned, they're also more susceptible to damage.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We will use the "pockethole joint," which means that we drill holes in the wooden pieces and then glue them together. If your wood is straight and flat, this method will work well. Dowel joinery might be a better option if your wood is not straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. First, measure the area where you wish to place the pocket joint. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will help ensure that the joint won't split later.
  3. Glue both sides together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

You should leave enough space between the pieces to allow you to turn them inside-out.
